Summer is a perfect time for students to enjoy reading and to help them maintain their literacy skills. According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, years of summers without access to books have the potential to add up to a four year reading achievement gap.

To review the student’s choice novel and determine independent reading level, parents may refer to Common Sense Media, Good Reads, ALA, and AR Book Finder.

Families will be responsible for obtaining copies of the assigned summer reading books. Recommendations for the Summer Reading assignments were made through the collaboration of a committee of teachers and librarians. If you are unable to obtain a copy of the required readings or have a concern with your child reading any of the books suggested, please contact Dr. Assetta at [email protected] (724) 695-5204 so an alternate assignment may be discussed.

Copies of the required books can easily be obtained from several sources:
