Internships provide students with a structured, sustained learning experience aligned with their career and college pathway. Students will gain real-world experience with an industry professional for a defined period of time at an established workplace. They will observe and participate in meaningful, practical work related to their field of study and career interest. Students will apply what they have learned in the classroom to practical, hands-on situations while developing valuable skills and building a professional network. Additionally, internships can help students stand out on resumes and applications, showing future employers and admissions officers their commitment to their chosen field. At West Allegheny, we have three different types of internships available to students: 1) internships embedded in academic courses, 2) internships for elective course credit within a students’ academic day, and 3) internships outside of a students’ academic day.
Students may register for an unpaid internship experience that will be scheduled into the academic school day, facilitated by a West Allegheny teacher. Students will earn a pass/fail grade that does not factor into their GPA. Students may also propose additional internships using the Internship Proposal Form.
All internships, outside of those embedded in an academic course, will receive elective credit at a rate of 120 hours/1 elective credit. Internships are available to students in grades 9-12.
