Small Group Counseling

Small Groups

Psycho-educational groups are facilitated by the school counselor and held during the regular school day. There are 6-8 sessions to each group. The sessions are approximately 45 minutes long and are scheduled so that students will miss a minimal amount of classroom instruction with times available to make up any work missed. 

The groups are offered to all students who must have their parent’s permission to attend. Groups offered include but are not limited to:

 

Changing Families - for students whose families are presently in a transitional phase i.e. separation, divorce, step or blended families.  Changes in families often have effects on children’s school behavior and academic work.  The purpose of this group is to help children deal with some of the problems they face relating to divorce, separation, and step-families in order to build their confidence and coping skills.

 

Behavior management-for students who may benefit from improving their behavior management/self control skills. The group will focus on recognizing and understanding feelings, learning self-control behaviors and recognizing consequences, gaining strategies to express feelings in positive ways, learning self-discipline and delay of gratification, and practicing relaxation strategies.

 

Stress - for students who may benefit from improving their stress management skills. The group will focus on defining and assessing individualized stress and coping with stress using multiple strategies such as relaxation, exercise, and a stress management plan.

 

Grief and Lossfor students who may benefit from gaining a better understanding of their loss experience. This group will focus on the stages of grief and the development of individual strategies to express their feelings appropriately.

 

Self-esteem- for students who may benefit by improving their self esteem and/or assertiveness. The group will focus on defining and building positive self-esteem, assertive communication and I Messages, feelings, forming friendships, and building self-confidence.

 

Social Skills- for students who may benefit from improving their social skills. The group will focus on (but not limited to) feelings and behaviors, manners, decision making/problem solving, stress management, self-esteem, communication and handling conflict.
