Peer Helpers

Peer Helpers

The peer helper program provides 4th and 5th grade student helpers to aid younger students in all academic areas. The peer helpers work directly with students in kindergarten through 3rd grade during school hours for up to 30 minutes per 6 day rotation. Peer Helpers offer support to students struggling with basic academic skills as well as well as helping with enrichment activities for students who need challenged.

The 4th and 5th grade students, who are nominated by their classroom teachers, are required to complete an application indicating why they would be an effective peer tutor. Also, each potential peer helper must obtain a letter of recommendation from a non related adult. The student must also be in good academic standing as well as demonstrate positive behavior in the school setting. These procedures help to identify students who are willing to seriously commit to participation in the program.

The program will provide an initial training and frequent feedback sessions to student helpers to assist them in being more effective tutors. Participating teachers will be able to share comments and suggestions with the peer helpers as well.

The goals of this program include providing individualized instruction, helping students improve on their grades and develop a more positive attitude toward school, increasing student self esteem, providing positive role models and building relationships across age groups.
