Campus programs include the Month of the Military Child, Veteran's Day activities, and pre-, mid-, and post-deployment workshops.
The most impactful event for WAHS is the Month of the Military Child with several activities scheduled throughout April. The month starts by establishing a “Military Child’s Table.” The table is a place setting that represents the Military Child and displays significant items symbolizing all aspects of a military child’s life. Purple Up is a national day that honors all military children. All military-connected students receive a customized t-shirt for the Purple Up event at no cost and t-shirts are sold to all District families as a fundraiser. A donation is made in honor of our military families to Heroes Supporting Heroes, a West Allegheny family non-profit organization that supports military and veteran families. West Allegheny High School also hosts a breakfast to thank all our military families at which we recognize our seniors who are enlisting in the armed forces with an official Enlistment Day attended by their family and recruiter. Through our partnerships with local bases, armed forces personnel come to the Purple Up campus program to thank our military families and children for their sacrifices. Family and event pictures are taken and shared on social media along with our dedicated military webpage.
Our Veteran’s Day activities differ every year as our students and staff find unique and creative ways to honor our Veterans. Activities have included a Veteran’s breakfast, Veteran interviews and presentations, and the MCJROTC Veteran’s celebration to commemorate the significance of the day.
By maintaining collaborative partnerships with local bases to provide information regarding available services to parents and celebrating our military families, we strive to create a military- friendly culture at West Allegheny High School.
